The Big Day Overcoming Pre-Race Jitters W/ Michael Mosiman
Anyone who has lined up on the starting gate knows that all-to-familiar feeling. Pre-race nerves affect everyone, from beginners to professionals, and being able to conquer your nerves and maintain mental focus is key. Thinking about the moments that lie ahead or a daunting obstacle on the track can cloud your mind and turn your stomach in knots—especially if you’re dealing with a lot of pressure—but the last thing you want to do is lose concentration. Ultimately, you have to channel your focus on your instincts and the skills you’ve developed in order to ride at your best and minimize mistakes.
“Being mentally strong is probably the most important aspect of a big race day because the last thing you want to do is psych yourself out before you even gear up, which is very easy to do,” said Michael Mosiman, a rookie in the 250 class who made his big debut at Hangtown with plenty of composure. “The biggest piece of advice that I can offer is not to overanalyze everything. Listen to your instincts and your abilities.” The youngster has logged a few impressive performances including an eighth overall at round two, as well as a 10th at round three, and he did so by sticking to these tips.
