With entries open for the 2017 RYA UKWA National Windsurfing Championships at Grafham Water on 9-10 September, we take a look at how the Team15 Champions Cup is giving the event a slightly different flavour.
Head down to Grafham Water on the first morning of the 2017 RYA UKWA National Windsurfing Championships and you will see things you probably wouldn’t expect. Windsurfers kneeling down, executing 360s and 720s, foot drags, heli tacks and heaps more you wouldn’t typically find at a national course racing championship.
But this year the National Windsurfing Championships is no typical course racing event, as for the first time the Team15 Champions Cup - once again contested as an event-within-an-event - sees a brand new Skills Cup introduced.
As Sam Ross, lead Team15 and RYA Zone and Techno UK Junior squads coach, explains: “This is the second year skills challenges have been part of the Team15 regional inter-club events. They have proved so popular and successful in their aim of embedding core windsurfing skills in young sailors we wanted to give all sailors, whatever their strengths, the chance to shine at Team15’s showcase event, the Champions Cup. By adding a separate skills championship alongside the racing competition we’re reinforcing the message that if you’ve got good core skills you can excel in and, most importantly, enjoy any windsurfing discipline you want for the rest of your life.”
