What happens when a dilapidated yet iconic structure is given a makeover? Here’s the story of restoring Bento Miguel, adding to Panjim’s good looks.

THE city of Panjim, Goa’s capital and commercial hub, has for years now been a depiction of the Goan traditions and culture all through its architecture and people. Its carefully designed buildings and monuments are a testimony to the Portuguese influence that this city was built upon. From its latin quarter, Fontainhas, to the carefully designed churches and shops, these have all been built with the intricate design and architecture of its colonised days. However, with the coming of modern times and cultures, very little is being done to maintain and do up the old buildings that were once considered to be the heart of Goan culture and life. We see the roofs of beautiful houses collapsing in, plants growing on the walls of the same, and close to nothing being done about the fixing and painting of these mesmerising structures.

Bento Miguel is one such structure that very badly required some work to be done on it. Located right as you enter the city of Panjim, this building is in walking distance of major monuments such as the Church of the Immaculate Conception and Adil Shahs Palace. The casinos and evening cruises are just around the corner with busy shopping streets such as the 18th June Road and M.G Road in close vicinity. The location of the building was spectacular. All it required was an eye that was interested in pushing it to its full potential.
