"Can you and Dad have the girls on Friday night? We've got a 'thing' on." Our daughter, Flynn, was talking loudly over a back seat squabble between our granddaughters, Audrey and Eleanor.
"That would be lovely," I said.
"What?"
"I SAID, THAT WOULD BE LOVELY!"
"Can you take them to netball on Saturday morning too?"
"Woo hoo! You know how much I miss Saturday sport."
She almost believed me for a minute or two.
When our kids were young the MOTH (Man of the House) worked weekends, and there were no nans or pops nearby. My mum lived in Canada and my mother-in-law in Lismore.
They insisted this wasn't deliberate.
Every week it was up to me to get five kids to different Saturday sports. By the time Ruff Red finished school I'd been to every oval, swimming pool, playing field, tennis court, gym and hamburger restaurant in New South Wales. Plus a few in Victoria and Queensland.
