What kind of person TROLLS A BABY?

Screaming in pain, I squeezed my husband Thiago’s hand for dear life.

I’d had 48 long, agonising hours of labour.

I’d had to be induced after tests at 37 weeks, when my blood-sugar levels rocketed.

Since then, it’d been one thing after another.

Two epidurals, problems dilating, every moment had been fraught with issues.

But when little Luna arrived in March this year, weighing 7lb, all that pain fell away.

But as my baby made her appearance, I saw my mum Mara’s expression drop, tears welling in her eyes.

‘What’s that on her face?’

Mum, 59, asked the doctor.

As Luna was placed on my chest, I was confused, and overwhelmed after two days in labour.

I spotted her arms and legs kicking, her full, thick hair. And then I saw it. Spread across her nose, cheeks and forehead was abig, black mark. Maybe she needs cleaning up after the birth, I thought.

‘What’s that?’ I asked the doctor.

‘I don’t know. A birthmark, maybe?’ he said.

Before I could ask more questions, Luna was whisked off to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

While she was gone, a hospital worker spoke to me.

‘We don’t know what the mark is yet. But it could be cancerous,’ she told me.

Breaking down, I sobbed into Thiago’s arms.

It felt so unfair that Luna was poorly, after everything Thiago and I had been through.

I’d gone through hormone treatment after being told it would be difficult to conceive, then suffered a miscarriage.

So when we’d discovered I was pregnant in June 2018, we were thrilled. And my scans hadn’t picked up anything unusual.

But now here we were, learning our daughter could have been born with cancer.

A mark blemishing her beautiful face.

That evening, Thiago and Mum went to see Luna.
