Jennifer Moss (54) is a Classically Trained Soprano, Turned Kids’ Entertainer, Turned African Drummer!
“I had an idyllic upbringing, especially when it came to music. My mother was a singer, my sister sang and one lot of grandparents were both singers – they met performing in the same operetta! Dad played a kit drum. He played in a dance band; you know, the old Friday night dances that were a thing.
I went to a very musical school and was surrounded by music there as well. It was an incredibly nurturing environment. Most girls at that time were steered into careers such as nursing, teaching or secretarial work, but I felt a very strong drive to pursue music.
So that’s what I did. I went to Victoria University – where I met my husband Sam – and graduated with a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance. In 1997, we moved to Sydney where I studied opera at the Conservatorium of Music and then freelanced as a soprano, doing recital tours, concert work, doing what’s called the oratorio circuit.
At the same time, I got shoulder-tapped by a colleague who had a kids’ entertainment trio, Incy Wincy, so I said why not?! It was run by ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) for Kids, who also manage The Wiggles.
