To a generation of women, she’s the genius who turned jeans into designer clothing. Gloria Vanderbilt, who died last week aged 95, created a fashion empire in the 1970s based on her slim-fitting jeans, becoming the first American to create a label using a family name.
But to an earlier generation, she was best known as the US’s “poor little rich girl” – the pawn in a scandalous trial that saw her mother and aunt battle for custody of her. And despite her privileged background, she endured more than her fair share of tragedy.
