There have probably been better mornings. My plan had been to meet my friend Wendy at the little cafe in the park for a bit of a gossip. No, that’s not strictly true. I had been hoping to meet Wendy for quite a lot of a gossip.
And so I sat outside and waited, trying to pretend that it wasn’t raining and that there wasn’t a biting wind. I wasn’t sitting in the rain, by the way. There is a little covered terrace. Despite the impression I might occasionally give, I was not born yesterday.
Anyway, I’d been there for about 20 minutes when my phone pinged. ‘Can’t come,’ said Wendy. ‘Fridge has fallen over.’
You’ve got to hand it to Wendy. This must be the first time somebody has cancelled an appointment because their fridge has had a fall. But why has her fridge fallen over? How did her fridge fall over? Are paramedics on the scene? Why did the writers of Casualty never think of this one? And why can’t Mr Wendy deal with this when there is urgent gossiping to be done?
