Once seen as a dying art, sewing is back with a vengeance. Sewing machine sales boomed during lockdown as we used our crafting skills to whip up facemasks and other DIY projects, and for many of us the love affair has continued.

It’s easy to see why. Sewing is a great way to save money as well as express your creativity – and it has a host of other benefits. Sew It Yourself With DIY Daisy author Daisy Braid explains why it’s time to get stitching!

FIT & PRACTICAL

Ready-to-wear clothes aren’t always a good fit – jeans can gape at the back and dresses can be too short. Tote bags can be too small, and too many things don’t have pockets. I love to eat, move and create, so I like to wear comfortable clothing with no restrictions and to make accessories that are useful to me.

CREATIVITY & SELF-CARE

I think everyone should have something that they do just for themselves. For me, sewing is a form of self-care and my creative outlet. I love how I feel when I transform flat pieces of fabric into something wearable – drawing lines, cutting, pinning and stitching pieces of fabric together to create something for yourself is extraordinary. I think all sewists will agree that when you try on your new creation it gives you a certain feeling – a combination of reward, satisfaction and excitement.
