He died of a heart attack last week at the age of 82, but Burt Reynolds will forever live on in cinematic history as the wisecracking, moustachioed movie heart-throb from iconic films such as Deliverance, Smokey and the Bandit and Boogie Nights.

Sadly, the legendary actor – who had undergone a quintuple heart bypass in 2010 – was on the verge of a career comeback. He was set to film Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, alongside Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, when he passed away in a Florida hospital.

It was a knee injury that saw the promising athlete, born in Michigan in 1936, ditch football in favour of the stage, which led to a string of television roles, including three years on the ’60s western series Gunsmoke.
