Ladies Beware…! You Are Not Immune To Heart Attack
It was long assumed that heart disease manifested the same in men and women. But Dr. Legato found that men may experience the classic symptoms of chest pain that radiates down the left arm. Woman often have symptoms including shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, and back or joint pain. A gender-neutral approach left many women underdiagnosed and under-treated and as a result many women died needlessly.

Heart disease is more common in men than women but now it is increasing fast in women also. American Heart Association (AHA) says to women that, “The thing I want women to remember is if something doesn’t feel right in your chest, get it checked out, emergency room doctors would much rather send home a patient than miss a heart attack.” It is due to different symptoms in women compared to men as women may not get the clinical symptom of chest pain at all.

In 2015, 1.10 crore people got affected with CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) and 89 lakh died. According to Women’s Heart Foundation, 42 per cent of women, who have heart attacks, die within 1 year, compared to 24 per cent of men. American Heart Association (AHA) recently informed that 2,67,000 women die each year from heart attack in USA, six times as many women as of breast cancer.

  • There are 44 million women in USA affected by cardiovascular diseases.

  • Cardiovascular diseases and stroke cause death of 1 in 3 women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds.

  • 80 per cent of heart disease and stroke events may be prevented by lifestyle changes and education.
