The quaint little valley of Tawang tucked away in the edges of the country is one of the last bastions of Tibetan Buddhist Monastic communities in India. It is home to the largest Buddhist monastery in India, and second-largest in the world following Lhasa’s Potala Palace in China. Part of what makes Tawang one of the most rewarding places to visit is the heavy toll the journey onwards extracts.
A two-day drive from Guwahati through the Sela Pass, which at 4000 meters forms one of the highest motorable roads in the world eventually ends you up at a valley quietly nestled in the northern corners of Arunachal Pradesh. The little towns of Bomdila and Dirang make for exciting stops on the way.
