The national population numbers fewer than 2000, yet after spending time at Hogsback in the Amatholes, Eastern Cape, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Cape Parrots were a dime a dozen and their Endangered status a farce. Cape Parrots are conspicuous in such strongholds, their dawn and dusk gatherings not quiet, their noisy flocks creating an illusion of abundance. But places like Hogsback, where Cape Parrot talk is cheap, are rare.
