THE three TJM-equipped Tritons were a surprise to Aussie media at the unveiling of the all-new sixth-gen 4x4 ute. After all, to have kit ready for the Triton’s reveal, TJM would have needed access to the vehicles for modelling work, as well as evaluating how the equipment might affect vehicle systems, suggesting the two companies have been collaborating for some time. The new Triton was revealed in Bangkok, and other than the TJM surprise, the headline act was the vehicle’s all-new stiffer and wider chassis, along with design, safety, refinement and load-lugging improvements.
On sale now in Thailand, we’ll have a preview drive of the new Triton towards the end of 2023, prior to a local launch of the model in February 2024. Australia is the Triton’s second-biggest market and we’ll be getting four variants here, starting with GLX and GLX+ (both fitted with Easy Select 4x4 system) before reaching the Super Select II-equipped GLS and GSR trims. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but Mitsubishi Australia CEO Shaun Westcott says the Triton won’t be a bargain-basement ute.
“There will be a price step up over the current generation. Let’s see what the market tells us, but we think we can sustain a much stronger price,” said Westcott, adding that he believes the new Triton with its improved cabin materials and drive experience will offer better value than the old model despite costing more. With the GSR’s key rival, the Toyota HiLux SR5, costing $62,490, we’d wager Mitsubishi’s new flagship will move up to circa $60K.
