MONDAY
What's the best way to spend the first day of a week's holiday? My ideal was to take a two-hour trip from the Cotswolds to the Ariel Motor Co at Crewkerne, to cadge a coffee and shoot the breeze with founder Simon Saunders (pictured standing above). The workshop was stuffed with half-built Atoms, their owners doubtless hoping for a long summer, plus the very last Ace motorcycle. Everything was buzzing. Life at Ariel has always defied economic bumps in the road: they already have 80 people interested in the forthcoming Nomad 2 off-roader, even though no one has seen the finished article.
