THE RED BULL choosing medium starting tyres and the Aston Martin choosing hards, Max Verstappen made a clean getaway to maintain his pole position and lead over Fernando Alonso into the opening corner. However, a rainstorm hit the track as the race progressed and their predetermined one and only stop drew near. It completely changed the course of the encounter, resulting in a flurry of offtrack forays, collisions with the barriers, and pit-lane action.

Alonso made his pit-stop when only a piece of the track was wet and initially ran on mediums. However, when the rain became heavier, he was obliged to return and run on intermediates, which the rest of the field also struggled for.
