The 40-year-old Barnard farmed with his father for 19 years before taking over the operations eight years ago. The family farms hops, plums, almonds and pecans.
For the past 15 years, their farm, Oppie Plaas Boerdery, has been counted among the top three producers of hops in the country. The farm is also one of only seven hops farms in Africa that exclusively supply hops for South African Breweries' Castle and Castle Lite.
