Thirty-six carefully selected farmworkers had the opportunity to attend the Vineyard Workers Development’s Vineyard School this year. Rosa Kruger, the founder of Vineyard Workers Development, said during the first day that the wine industry was under immense financial pressure and more and more farmers internationally were looking at mechanisation to improve production efficiencies.
Her advice to workers was to be on time, show respect and become indispensable on the farms they worked on: “You will guarantee your future on a farm by doing these three things.”
She encouraged them to think outside of the box. “Go the extra mile. Look for ways in which you can improve operations and render the workplace better and friendlier.”
