Derek Bullard, CEO of Already Autism Health, unwittingly followed in his mother's footsteps when she left the banking industry to pursue her dream of becoming a foster parent for a child with special needs. Bullard wanted to be a "big brother" and help his parents care for their 15-year-old foster son, going so far as to receive official training.
That action triggered far-reaching ripple effects.
About a week after earning his license as a foster parent, Bullard received a call from a social worker asking if he would consider temporarily taking in a 14-yearold boy named James. That placement lasted four years and shifted Bullard's entire career focus.
