Multifaceted LITTERATEUR

In conversation with MARWAR India, acclaimed writer, author, poet and communications consultant Supriya Newar talks about her multifaceted career, her books and passions.

Born and brought up in Kolkata, Supriya Newar began her professional journey pursuing a career in the world of brands and communication, post a Master of Arts degree from Jadavpur University. A compulsive writer from her college days, she was not to remain hemmed in by the corporate world, however. After fifteen years as a communications specialist, she gave free reins to the innate litterateur in her by penning ‘Pink Slip’, a throwback to the era when cinema tickets used to be slips of green or pink paper. ‘Pink Slip’ went on to be the opening chapter of her much appreciated book 'Kalkatta Chronicles', which was a nostalgia-filled ride into the quirks and unique charms that make Kolkata what it is. Following the success of 'Kalkatta Chronicles', her other celebrated works such as 'Kolkata Classics' and 'Justaju' were published.

Supriya Newar wields her literary talents with virtuosic skill and passion. Her writing is nuanced and sensitive and resonates effortlessly with readers. Her oeuvre comprises countless newspaper articles, books, essays, poems, prose, travelogues and tribute pieces. She also enjoys mentoring and has taught at The Heritage College, St Xavier’s College and The Statesman School of Print Journalism. Newar is also associated with significant cultural and social organisations and is a music aficionado and travel enthusiast as well.

How and when did you start writing?

I started writing in the second year of college. I was studying at St Xavier’s College, doing my Bachelor of Arts. During that time, along with my college degree, I also pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communications. Back then, there were several English papers coming out of Calcutta such as
