Sustainability is not a choice but a priority for industries all over the world, particularly in the manufacturing sector. Several environmental policies have been implemented by both the government and various agencies to adopt green infrastructure, but one problem persists: embedding sustainability in every aspect of manufacturing operations. This panel discussed ways in which sustainability can be made a reality in current manufacturing processes. The discussion was moderated by Rajesh Nath, Managing Director of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) India Office.
What is sustainability?
Sustainability means meeting current needs without compromising future generations. Dr Nagahanumaiah, Director, CMTI, emphasised, “Sustainable manufacturing starts with product design and continues through the process. Technology is driven by process and treatment design.” He stressed that sustainability must be a core focus from the beginning.
Anil K. Makkar, Group Chief Sustainability Officer, JK Organisation, emphasised the need for resource optimisation and conservation in manufacturing. “Sustainability means optimising and conserving the four Ms – Man, Machine, Material, and Methods. Energy, manpower, and materials must be efficiently used to safeguard the planet and future generations.” He stressed that sustainability should be embedded in an organisation’s values and vision, starting with leadership.
Mihir Shah, Executive Director, Vipul Organics, brought in a business perspective, noting that the pursuit of sustainability must align with economic realities. “The business has to be sustainable. It just cannot be a lofty idea.”
