Shakira’s lips don’t lie. The Colombian-born singer has made a spectacular comeback to the music scene with the release of her first album in almost seven years.

And while promoting her latest work, she has opened up with unflinching honesty about how the heartache of her failing relationship with footballer Gerard Piqué, with whom she shares two sons, helped fuel her ambition to get back on top.

“I was in the mud,” she said last week. “I had to reconstruct myself, to reunite all the pieces that had fallen apart.

“There were so many pieces of my life that crumbled in front of my eyes and I had to rebuild myself, picking up the bones from the floor and putting them all together,” the 47-year old told a newspaper. “And the glue that kept it all together was music.”

Determined not to hold back when asked about the demise of her relationship, she said she put her career on the back burner while concentrating on raising Milan, now 11, and nine-year-old Sasha with former Spain and Barcelona star Gerard, 37. The couple were together for 11 years before breaking up in 2022 amid reports that Gerard had been unfaithful.
