Brain cancer patients usually undergo surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, followed by radiation and chemo - either in pill form or intravenously. But the amount of chemo that can be safely administered is often ineffective since humans cannot tolerate the high doses needed to overcome the blood-brain barrier, say researchers.
Traditionally, “the tumors invariably grow back, and then there’s no proven treatment,” says Dr. Jeffrey Bruce of the Columbia University Medical Center, who is one of the study’s senior authors.
