The first UK coronation in 70 years is set to take place in May, and now exciting plans for celebrating the historic event have been unveiled. A royal procession, a balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace and a star-studded concert will all form part of the celebrations for King Charles III’s coronation, which will take place over the weekend of Saturday 6 May to Monday 8 May.
But in a break from royal tradition, it’s thought that, unlike his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Charles is not going to wear a traditional coronation outfit. On the advice of aides, the 74-year-old is reportedly ditching the suit, robes, breeches and silk stockings his grandfather and great-grandfather wore for the occasion, and wearing his military uniform instead. “Senior aides think breeches look too dated,” a royal source has said.
The palace have confirmed the joint crowning of the King and Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday morning and the service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
According to the palace, it will be “a solemn religious service, as well as an occasion for celebration and pageantry”. The service will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”.
