When Princess Kate and Prince William arrived at London's Royal Albert Hall on Nov. 9, camera flashes lit up the night sky, illuminating a rare glimpse of the couple's quiet intimacy. Throughout the Festival of Remembrance that evening, William placed his hand on the small of Kate's back, a subtle yet comforting gesture he repeated as they moved through the crowd. In response Kate mirrored his touch, underscoring their close connection. "It was solicitous and protective in a very understandable way," observes royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith. "She was going into a big event where she was going to be on display. There was an element of reassurance in the way he was behaving."
For good reason. The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 42, have weathered the hardest period in their lives following Kate's cancer diagnosis earlier this year. After months of treatment she announced the end of her chemotherapy in September. William shared an update on his wife's recovery while in Cape Town, South Africa, just days before their joint appearance, saying she is "doing really well." Having faced the dual challenges of Kate's health crisis and his father King Charles's cancer diagnosis, William reflected on the toll: "It's been dreadful. It's probably been the hardest year in my life. But I'm so proud of my wife; I'm proud of my father-for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it's been brutal."
