Throughout the years, getting tattoos has moved from the fringes of subculture into mainstream culture. The shift in perception led to a growing acceptance of tattoos in society as a whole, with many people using them to memorialize signif icant occasions or express their individuality.
But, outside the realm of self-expression, another reason tattoos are popular is because of the healing qualities they possess. Recent studies have found that getting a tattoo can be a way to deal with a traumatic event. The studies also suggest that body art can also serve as a visual reminder of a person’s strength and ability to get through hard times.
Additionally, tattoos have been found to have a therapeutic effect on mental health as the process of getting one can release endorphins and provide a sense of accomplishment. Now, many people see tattoos as a form of self-care and healing. Three of the female tattoo artists we spoke with echo the same sentiments. Tattoos, according to these artists, are liberating for women, especially those who have been abused or traumatized, since they allow women to reclaim their bodies and express themselves in a way that is genuine to them. In fact, some tattoo shops are now treated as safe havens for folks who are looking to heal by being inked.
