Sculpting his wild subjects from life, Fred Gordon is breaking new ground in bronze, says Janet Menzies

LANDSCAPES usually stay fairly still, which makes painting them en plein air a relaxed and even leisurely process. Producing a sculpture of a rhinoceros from life in the African bush is rather more of a challenge, says bronze sculptor Fred Gordon. It all came about when he was on an artist's residency in the Limpopo area of South Africa. "The game reserve next door was breeding rhinos, and I spent a couple of days with them. I was allowed to be right in front of the rhinos - they were feet away. It was incredible. I had my portable studio with me, so I was sculpting while I was with them," he remembers.
