From the first year I discovered upland bird hunting in my early teens, my search for the right clothing and equipment began in earnest. All you need to see to support this reality is to look at all the upland clothing and equipment I have stored from ceiling to floor in my garage and sportsman’s closet downstairs

Sound familiar? It doesn’t matter if you are just getting started in bird hunting or if you are hunting the uplands for your 45th season – having the necessary clothing and accessories on hand can make or break your comfort and ability to stay afield from sunup to sundown.

Most upland hunting excursions take at least a few hours or more to enjoy and appreciate. The question is, do you have the right equipment to make this possible? From your head to your toes, choose the wrong upland hunting equipment and your days afield could be miserable and cut way short on the amount of time you wanted to spend in search of the game bird of the day. So … what are the are the necessities you must or should have available throughout the season? A short list, from head to toe:

Headwear: A blaze orange baseball-type cap with a green underbill. There are many fine caps to consider depending on the weather of the day, from waterproof caps for rainy days to mesh-back styles for warmer days. Anytime you see a blaze orange cap that fits you well and has the features you want, buy two or three because sure as heck if you think you will find that same hat again after one wears out or is lost, that is almost a guaranteed impossibility.

Upland bird hunting ball caps are great if the weather is moderate, but what about hats when the temperatures start to drop below freezing? Orange stocking caps made of wool or fleece are mandatory to keep your head and ears warm.
