This versatile group of shrubs has year-round garden appeal. Which one is right for your garden?

Viburnum

If you're searching for a shrub that can do it all, look no further than viburnum. Some types sport dramatic snowball-like flower clusters and steal the show in spring like the impressive Chinese snowball at left. Others' flat-topped blooms give way to colorful berries and foliage. Whether you're looking for a striking focal point or an anchor for a mixed border, there's probably a viburnum to complement your garden style. Hardy and reliable, many species are resistant to deer and rabbits, drought tolerant, and even able to thrive near black walnut trees. Once you grow a viburnum, you'll wonder how you ever got by without one. (Or you may start expanding your collection!)

CARING FOR VIBURNUMS Most viburnum species thrive in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil. Regular pruning isn't necessary: You'll usually only need to do so to remove dead, damaged or weak stems. If you notice fewer flowers, you may need to thin out older branches to improve airflow and allow more light in to encourage healthy new growth and better flowering.

For overgrown or declining shrubs, renewal pruning can help-remove a third of the oldest, thickest stems at ground level each year over three years to encourage new growth. Do this for spring bloomers, such as doublefile viburnum, Japanese and Chinese snowball, immediately after they flower to preserve next year's buds. Rejuvenate summer and fall bloomers, such as arrowwood and smooth viburnum, in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Use clean, sharp tools and step back periodically to check the plant's shape as you prune.

On the following pages, we'll explore a few standout species to help you find the perfect fit for your garden-whether you're aiming for year-round color, wildlife appeal or a bold statement shrub.
