Horticulture|January - February 2024
EACH YEAR, plant brands release exciting new cultivars to market, the results of years of breeding, selecting, trialing and propagating. New plants are bred to enhance traits that make them stand out against comparable cultivars-and in your garden.

NEW PLANTS - Fragrant selections

On these pages we'll take a look at new cultivars that offer fragrant flowers (along with other benefits!).

Note: Although all these plants will be sold at retail in 2024, their availability may be limited because they are new. Keep an eye out for them reaching your area in the future if you can't find them yet. We've also included some cultivars released in recent years that should now be easier to find.

FLAVORETTE HONEY-APRICOT ROSE

ROSA x 'BOZNATAFRA' X

New from Proven Winners ColorChoice Shrubs, Flavorette Honey-Apricot is unique among roses in that it was developed for culinary use. Its petals contribute a sweet, fruity flavor and fragrance to salads, desserts, tinctures and infusions. Their soft orange color makes them a pretty garnish for dishes and, of course, the garden. Flavorette Honey-Apricot is a disease-resistant rose and it blooms throughout summer without deadheading.

Type of plant: Reblooming shrub rose

Size and habit: Flavorette Honey-Apricot grows as an upright shrub reaching five to eight feet tall and three to four feet wide.

Exposure: Full sun

Growing notes: Provide full sun and average, well-drained soil. In early spring, apply a rose fertilizer and prune the canes back by at least a third, cutting just above a growth bud. USDA Zones 4-8.

PEARLS OF PERFUME MOCK ORANGE

PHILADELPHUS LEWISII X CORONARIUS 'G15097'

Pearls of Perfume is a new hybrid mock orange that reblooms from spring through fall, with white double flowers that emit a citrusy scent.

Succeed With Succession- The best crops to plant throughout summer, plus how to time them right

The best crops to plant throughout summer, plus how to time them right. Once a crop like spring turnips or snap peas has finished, I tidy up the bed, amend the soil with a thin layer of compost and replant. Depending on the new crop, I may be sowing seeds or transplanting seedlings.
