OUR EXPERT Hannah Barrett (hannahbarrett.com) is a yoga teacher and author of Yoga Happy (£20, Quadrille).
As the cold, dark months stretch out ahead, many of us will want to hunker down until spring. But, let's be honest, who's got time to rest when festive to-do lists are groaning and our diaries are filling up? As end-ofyear pressure builds, it's no surprise that overwhelm and anxiety levels also start to soar. In fact, a third of Brits say they're frazzled by the time Christmas arrives*.
Wondering how to survive the coming season? Finding ways to unwind your body and mind is key - here's how to swap chaos for calm over the coming weeks.
REFRAME EXPECTATIONS
High expectations can make the festive period feel difficult. 'There are lots of reasons why there's the pressure to have the "perfect" family gathering, or to find the "perfect" gifts, not to mention financial worries,' says Hannah.
Finding pockets of calm provides much-needed perspective. 'When you're constantly busy and moving at 100mph, you can't see the wood for the trees, so taking a moment to pause will give you clarity.'
In a notebook, jot down the things that matter most and let go of the things that don't - this might mean pledging to spend a little less money on presents, or dialling down your social obligations -
NURTURE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
Darker days can meddle with our mood, so go easy on yourself if you're feeling low, teary or irritable. According to the NHS, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), often known as 'the winter blues', affects around two million people in the UK, but can impact many of us to a varying degree.
'Placing value and spending time on self-care is vital, says Hannah. 'Even if it's just 15-20 minutes each day, taking time out to do something that brings you joy can make a huge difference.
