When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex upped sticks and moved to the US, stepping back from their senior royal roles, it marked the end of the Fab Four – a moniker they held alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales after several appearances together. They had been seen as the bright future of the monarchy.
At first, they were replaced by the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. Edward and Sophie appeared to be first in line to roll up their sleeves when William and Kate needed additional cast members. But with ever-increasing public demands – and the unlikely return to the stage of the disgraced Prince Andrew – the Fab Four had their work cut out.
Now it seems there’s a Super Six on the horizon, as Zara and Mike Tindall’s popularity skyrockets. It seems the public can’t get enough of the down-to-earth pair. ‘Mike and Zara are definitely firm favourites with the public,’ body language guru Darren Stanton says of the couple. And when it comes to their chemistry with William and Kate, they couldn’t be more at ease. ‘I think it’s clear that they’ve got a great dynamic,’ adds Darren.
In a sign that the couple are taking more of a front row in royal events, Mike and Zara were seen mingling with Kate and William following the royal’s Easter service at Windsor and had pride of place at the King’s coronation concert in May. Recently they joined senior royals for the first day of Royal Ascot.
Given that they live a privileged life – raising their three children, Mia, nine, Lena, five, and Lucas, two, on the Princess Royal’s Gatcombe Park estate – it’s quite a feat to come across so normal. So how do Mike and Zara do it?
