THIS CHINESE NEW YEAR 2025 marks my fifth year without my family and my fifth time celebrating it alone in my room, wearing the same red dress I have worn for the fifth year in a row. It's a knitted Zara number my mother bought long ago—one I never seem to grow out of.
Through the strange roads of adolescence, Chinese New Year has slowly lost its meaning to me, which sounds diabolical coming from a Chinese girl raised in a family that still practises and respects the traditions to this day. Blasphemous? Maybe. In part, it's because I am physically far away from home. A more bitter, shameful part is feeling as though I'm deliberately left out of something that is supposed to be a part of who I am. A small, irate vein of my anger stems from the knowledge that it was my own doing that led to this situation.
