JURINE ERWEE
Special FX Makeup and Prosthetic Artist @monsterfactoryza
“I HAVE BEEN OBSESSED WITH MAKEUP EFFECTS SINCE I WAS A TEEN. We used to make these silly youtube movies and one time we did a zombie movie (the budget was probably about R50) and I was thinking we can make it scary. So I found Pritt, tissue paper and lipstick and went to town! Since then I fell in love with the idea of monsters, wounds used in film, action movies, and even Marvel movies, where I’d start picking out the makeup,” says Erwee.
Asked if she is ever viewed as “the weird girl” growing up, she laughs as yes she is STILL the weird girl and she’s just turned 30 years old. “I’ve been called all kinds of names - someone on a livestream of an eNCA interview called me a devil child once, but I don’t really care because if my art evokes a feeling, I did my job. And honestly it just comes with the territory and subject matter I guess.” She has been active professionally since 2016 and has been building up her products, machine and home-based studio since then.
“I was inspired to go professional one day when I started cosplaying. I would enter competitions or dress up for conventions and so learned with household materials and later on proper materials on the making of specific pieces. I went on a study spree, went to college then found online schooling, and once I was ready I started marketing my way into the film industry where I still work and do commissions for today.
