Greatest Speeches in Human History
Famous Lasting Words

From the ancient orators of Greece and Rome to the modern leaders of the 21st century, the art of delivering a compelling speech has always played a pivotal role in shaping the course of nations and societies. Great men have invariably used speeches as their medium of communication to serve as catalysts for change, inspiration and unity. Let us take a look at some of the greatest speeches in human history, analysing their impact and enduring legacies.

One of the earliest examples of powerful oratory comes from ancient Greece, the birthplace of democracy. In 431 BCE, at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians held their traditional public funeral for all those who had been killed. After the dead had been buried in a public grave, one of the leading citizens, chosen by the city, would offer a suitable speech.

On this occasion, Pericles, a prominent Athenian statesman, was chosen. His Funeral Oration has become one of the most famous and influential passages in Thucydides' work. It offers a stirring tribute to the culture of Athens, to democracy and freedom, while celebrating the men who are willing to die for their city to defend these ideals. Honoring the fallen soldiers, Pericles also emphasised the importance of individual sacrifice for the greater good. This speech laid the foundation for the concept of civic duty, and became a model for future leaders seeking to inspire and unite their citizens.
