When Lee Sze Yeng began working at KPMG Singapore as an intern more than 30 years ago, the firm was an auditing player of 500 employees. It has since grown to be a multi-disciplinary professional services firm of almost 4,000 employees and Lee has ridden the wave of exponential growth to become the first female managing partner of the Singapore office. Here, she speaks about her career choice, leadership approach, and being a woman at the top of her profession.
Why did you choose auditing as a profession?
I knew from the start that auditing would give me broad-base exposure to different businesses and sectors, locally and overseas. This would in turn allow me to explore areas of interest and hone my skills.
My career has been nothing but exciting, with varied experiences and access to world-class organisations that have allowed me to constantly challenge myself and grow as a professional over the years.
There have been several highlights in my career, and each has allowed me to gain a wider perspective, build meaningful connections and grow personally and professionally.
For instance, in the year I was seconded to London, I worked with a global investment bank and gained insights into their worldwide operations. I was particularly impressed by the diversity of people and talents in London and the vibrancy it created. That experience helped open my mind to diversity and inclusion.
Describe a career-changing opportunity you capitalised on and what it takes, as a woman, to seize the moment.
I believe in making every opportunity a learning experience. This means embracing what each offers, even if it may initially seem daunting, as it can turn out to be the most rewarding.
