For wildlife enthusiasts who are curious about the Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, or simply what to expect from Indian safaris, Aman-i-Khas in Rajasthan offers a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Set on the edge of the lush Ranthambore National Park, a former royal hunting ground and home of the Bengal tiger, this tented camp designed by Jean-Michel Gathy provides guests with creature comforts and easy access to wildlife. What's more? Since 2018, Aman-i-Khas has had the privilege of working with Daulat Singh Shaktawat, who is an esteemed conservationist and expert in animal behaviour and tracking.
The retired deputy conservator of the park has served over 40 years there, 37 of which were dedicated to tiger conservation. Today, he organises drives that are highly sought-after by Aman guests. The expert shares the highlights of a safari experience in Rajasthan, and tips on getting the most out of it.
STAR OF THE PARK
Until today, Shaktawat is still in awe of the endangered Bengal tiger, despite losing an eye in an attack in 2010. Even after getting mauled and maimed by a cat codenamed RT-7, he continued his visits until it passed away last April. "Tigers don't mean harm. It's only humans who do," says the expert, who insists that the beast was acting in defence after being cornered by villagers with sticks and stones. "The Bengal tiger is very majestic and would prefer to keep away, unless it feels threatened."
