Amazon's place at the top of the e-ink tree is facing more challenges than ever.

Not only are new challengers flying in the likes of Onyx and ReMarkable are doing some very interesting things with tablet tech - but one particular old rival, Kobo, has powered itself up to match. Kobo's recent e-readers are stupendous; its all-you-can-read Kobo Plus service is a boon for the voracious word consumer, and now it has fired its volley at the Kindle Scribe in the form of the Elipsa 2E.

TAKE A NOTE

For most readers of dog-eared books with pen-filled margins, the 2E's note-taking abilities will trump the somewhat clumsy sticky note feature of the Kindle Scribe. You can scrawl directly on whichever book you like, wherever you like using the technology from multi-platform app favourite Nebo.
