Paul Mackin, 60, Hobart, Tas
Watching the news one night, I couldn't tear my eyes away from the TV. It was 2015, and stories of refugees from war-torn countries, such as Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, being separated from their homes and families affected me deeply.
These people have been through so much, I thought.
Wanting to help, I contacted the Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (MRC Tas) who are contracted by the Department of Home Affairs to deliver the Humanitarian Program (HSP) in Tasmania.
The program supports humanitarian entrants and other eligible visa holders to integrate into Australian life by building the skills and knowledge they need to become self-reliant and active members of the community.
