VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY IN ATHLETES

Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphate. Over one billion people worldwide are vitamin D deficient, which can increase the risk of stress fractures, depressed immunity and reduced physical performance. Higher vitamin D levels are linked to greater muscle strength in younger and older adults. Older people with higher vitamin D levels have greater upper and lower body strength. Adequate vitamin D levels are important for promoting bone health, muscle mass and strength. It plays a critical role in muscle protein synthesis. Some health experts have suggested that vitamin D-deficient people should consume 1,000 to 2,000 international units of vitamin D supplements per day. Consult your health care professional before taking any supplements.
