HARRY Kane sprinted towards me. Jubilant, I watched as his England teammates piled on top of him, just a few feet away.
I was in Gelsenkirchen as a Broadcaster Unilateral Services Volunteer at Euro 2024 and this was my fourth and last match, having previously been at Serbia v England, Spain v Italy and Portugal v Georgia.
I was one of six volunteers in the role and our job was to assist the highly experienced team of BLOS (Broadcast Liaison Officers).
Our tasks would change from one match to another, giving every one of us volunteers the chance to experience each and every position.
For instance, for the first match I helped commentators to their seats and watched the game from the media tribune. Then, for the next game, I helped out pitchside during the pre-match and ended up sitting next to Ally McCoist and Clive Tyldesley during the match.
For Georgia v Portugal, I had the office shift, so I stayed in the office during the first half and later watched on from the commentary positions again.
Saving the best until last, I was pitchside throughout the Round of 16 clash between England and Slovakia.
On matchday, my shift started at 11.30am, six and a half hours prior to kick off. That is when I found out I would be pitchside for the game.
