Charlton, who scored 49 goals in 106 appearances for England, grew up with brother and fellow football legend Jack Charlton in the Northumberland town, which has become famous with producing several high-profile sports stars.
The Charltons’ uncle, Jackie Milburn, was Newcastle United’s all-time record goalscorer for just under half a century before Alan Shearer took over that mantle in 2005.
Former manager and Ashes winning cricketer Steve Harmison, current England fast bowler Mark Wood, plus former Burnley manager Jimmy Adamson are all classed as proud Ashington folk.
But it is Sir Bobby that can lay claim to being the famous mining town’s most favourite son following a 17-year stay at Manchester United which saw him survive the 1958 Munich air crash and go on to help England lift the World Cup in 1966.
