And it was an emotional and sometimes tearful homecoming as the first competitive game in 1,547 days at the club’s home for the last 138 years was a triumphant one as they comprehensively defeated Glossop North End as the pain and hurt came to an end.
It was an especially proud moment for Shakers manager Andy Welsh, who has been in charge since the club reformed as Bury AFC for the 2020-21 season.
“I won the Championship with Sunderland and played in the Premier League and MLS, but this was up there alongside the big moments in my career,” he said. “It was incredible to be back at this stadium. The main thing was getting back to Gigg Lane and having fans here in their droves, but this has to be the start.”
