23k students repeated yr after Gujarat ended no-detention rule

State government removed the policy for Class 5, 8 in 2023 to help improve education quality

Suresh, a Class 5 student in a government school, failed to do a simple addition of 70+15 in the exam, despite having learnt this in the previous standard. After Gujarat decided to do away with the no-detention policy from 2023, he was among other academically weak students who were given a chance to appear in the re-exam. However, he failed this too and had to repeat Class 5.

According to Gujarat education department officials, 23,502 students in Class 5 and Class 8 in government, grant-in-aid, social and tribal welfare department, and private schools had to repeat a year in school.
