A city-wide police combing operation, prompted by a stern warning to "perform or perish" by Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi (in picture), on Monday night resulted in the checking of 21,223 vehicles, including 3,111 two-wheelers. The operation, led by all zonal DCPs and their teams of 30-50 personnel, led to the seizure of 199 weapons under the Gujarat Police Act. A total of 1,791 vehicles were detained.
The confiscated items included Rambo knives, swords, and sharp-edged instruments.
A senior police official noted that such weapons, often carried by anti-social elements, could result in spontaneous murders, citing the recent fatal stabbing of MICA student Priyanshu Jain in Bopal by a police constable.
