Despite thousands of orange bicycles lying rusted and unused across Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, the state government issued a tender on Wednesday to buy 1.70 lakh more. These are destined for ninth-grade girls from Scheduled Castes and OBC communities under the Saraswati Sadhana Yojana.
The scheme, launched in 2019 to provide free bicycles, has been plagued with problems. Last year's bicycles remain undistributed due to their sub-standard quality, rendering them useless. These unused bikes are now languishing in godowns and schoolyards across the state, including a residential school in Lambha, Ahmedabad, and locations in Anand, Vyara, Una, and Devgadh Baria.
