British battle on Paris surface is not easy fix

FEET OF CLAY

DAN EVANS has mocked younger British stars for accepting defeat on clay and celebrating small successes  back home on grass.

All six singles players lost in the first round of the French Open the fourth time there has not been a British singles victory in Paris this century.

Slower clay courts, common across Europe, have traditionally been the least successful surface for Britons.

Sue Barker was the last Briton to win the French Open singles title in 1976.

Her compatriots have now won only 12 Tour-level matches out of 40 during the European clay-court season.

World No.62 Evans admitted the French Open had been "a bit of a tough tournament" and cited Jack Draper as someone who could do well on the surface in the future.
