THOUSANDS of festive swimmers took their barmy annual dips yesterday, buoyed by the news that it was one of the warmest Christmas Days on record.
The tradition often sees people braving icy waters around the UK. But those taking part this year must have been warmed by the news that temperatures had reached unseasonable highs.
The warmest in England was 13.5C, recorded in Okehampton, Devon.
Meanwhile, Scotland had its hottest ever Christmas as thermometers in Dyce, Aberdeenshire, hit 14.3C - way above the old record of 10.6C, set at Dounreay in the Highlands, back in 1971.
For the rest of the UK the mercury hovered at around 12C to 13C - about 5C warmer than usual.
