A SENIOR Fujitsu engineer, whose evidence helped to send a pregnant postmistress to jail, made a false court statement about the flawed Post Office IT system, it was claimed yesterday.

Gareth Jenkins's evidence contradicted a report he had written on Horizon just nine days earlier, according to the BBC. He is understood to be under investigation by the Met Police for potential perjury.

More than 900 sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted after faulty software made it look like money was missing from their branch accounts. Seema Misra, who was eight weeks pregnant with her second child, was sentenced to 15 months in prison in November 2010.

In his statement in October 2010, Mr Jenkins said there were "no cases" where external systems could alter branch accounts without postmasters' knowledge and authorisation.
