BRITAIN'S their first golds of the Games yesterday when swimmers Poppy Maskill and Tully Kearney both stormed to victory on the opening day.

GB golden girls making a splash in Parisian pool

Paralympians pooled Poppy, 19, set a new world record of 1:03:00 in the S14 100m butterfly final.

The teenager, from Middlewich, Cheshire, won her heat earlier in the day and was in pole position in lane 4 when she dived in and beat Hong Kong's Yui Lam Chan into second place in Paris.

Honoured

World champion Tully, 27, won her gold in the S5 200m freestyle final after fighting back from a head injury to get to the Games.

The golden girls' victories followed three silver medals for stars of ParalympicsGB.

Fellow swimmer Will Ellard won his in the men's S14 100m butterfly.

The 18-year-old from Beccles, Suffolk, missed out on gold by a fraction of a second to Alexander Hillhouse of Denmark.

Cyclist Daphne Schrager, 23, won Britain's very first medal of the Paris Paralympics when she took silver in the C1-3 3000m individual pursuit in the velodrome.
